Avanyu is the Water Serpent,
a two-horned serpent
who lives in the water table
beneath the earth.
He has legs
and can both walk and swim.
His movements cause the earth
to shake.
The people recognize this portent.
They welcome Avanyu cautiously
because they know
that change can be full
of delight or great difficulty.
Avanyu carries the Spirit Canoe
full of twelve intrepid souls
who dance, sing and make music
to accompany their journey
through transformation.
They return to their village
with great gifts from their quest.
They invite us to follow.
